Sip & Science: The Birds of New York -10,000 BCE

We are thrilled to welcome back our partner, the Rochester Academy of Science, for our first presentation after summer break. You are a bit late to see a Prairie Chicken at your bird feeder. You'd have to go to Illinois, Wisconsin or further west to see one today. But they used to live in New York. Find out how we know. Bird fossils are exceedingly rare due to their fragility, but occasionally one will be found in the sediments when a larger fossil from the ice age is excavated, such as a mammoth or mastodon. The Buffalo Museum of Science had teams excavating their Ice Age and more recent site in Byron, NY from 1988 to 2011. Our speaker worked as a volunteer at that site from 2007 until it was closed and then worked in the museum's fossil collection photographing and archiving specimens from the Byron dig until 2015. Our speaker will be Michael Grenier, who is President of the Rochester Academy of Science. Michael is a Cretaceous paleontology and paleoecology specialist with many summers’ experience in the field and is a long-time member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. He has his Bachelors degree in Geology form the University of Rochester and his Masters degree in Geology from SUNY Buffalo. Member: free; non-members: $5.00 Register >>
